Devotions on Proverbs: Proverbs 2:1-11

C1 Note the conditions needed for the result

D1 Depending on how you understand the verses there several of conditions to be meet before there is a result. These are (listed by verb). In summary, we must be willing to listen, pay attention closely, ask diligently, and strongly desire and use effort to find wisdom.

D2 Likewise, the nouns. In summary, we are to know, learn, listen to the words and commands of knowledge and wisdom, to understand the principles and reasons for these words, and to desire them as money and hidden treasure.

C2 The result is to understand the character traits of God and His worldview and lifestyle. The word fear has the meaning that God is judge, and we must give an account of ourselves someday. As believing Christians we have assurance of salvation, because of the ministry of God the Son for us (the Gospel). The judgment seat we face is the Bema seat of Christ where we are judged for rewards [Romans 14:10 NKJV, 2 Corinthians 5:10, 1 Corinthians 3:12-15]

C3 Yahweh is the source of wisdom, knowledge, understanding, counsel, safety, preservation, and protection. There are conditionslisted aboveand the conditions of obeying His rules. These are the rules of His kingdom. These are the rules the He lives by and requires us to obey these.

C4 If these blessings are not enough, we also learn that God’s instructions will give us perception to avoid making bad decisions. We will understand what is right, just, and fair. This is not just a philosophical knowledge but knowledge we can apply to every activity in life. This gift of God also results in finding knowledge and wisdom to be pleasant and enjoyable. Discretion and understanding will protect and guard us. This is because we will make wise choices and decisions instead of stupid choices.

C5 Questions:

B1 How do we learn God’s principles of wisdom, etc.?

B2 How do we live these principles?

B3 How do we encourage and teach others to live these principles?

A Few Thoughts About Suppressing the Truth

Romans 1:18 NRSV For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and wickedness of those who by their wickedness suppress the truth.

Words

B1 Truth

C1 The Greek word is ἀλήθεια alḗtheia. It means reality, the actual state of affairs. Things and happenings that are not concealed (Strong G227).

C2 Mark 5:33 EMTV But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.

B2 Suppress

C1 The Greek word is κατέχω katéchō. It means to hold back, hinder, and in some contexts keep tightly to oneself as in 1 Thessalonians 5:21. Here to hinder and suppress.

C2 For Romans 1:18 and Romans 7:6 TDNTa has this sense: for holding illegally.

Compare the word revealed with the word suppress. The former is not cover-up but the latter is. See Matthew 10:26-27 EMTV Therefore do not fear them. For nothing is concealed that shall not be unveiled, and secret that shall not be made known. 27 "What I say to you in the dark, say in the light; and what you hear in the ear, proclaim on the housetops.

How to people suppress truth?

B1 Lie

B2 Pretend something never happened

B3 Refuse to print or discuss an incident

B4 Ignore

B5 Threaten harm if something is revealed

B6 Falsely accuse someone who has the truth

C1 Projection is often used.

C2 Projection is the process of displacing one’s feelings onto a different person, animal, or object. The term is most commonly used to describe defensive projection—attributing one’s own unacceptable urges to another. The concept emerged from Sigmund Freud’s work in the 1890s. (Source)

B7 Have their supporters help by shaming the truth teller

B8 Gaslight them (Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation in which a person or a group covertly sows seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or group, making them question their own memory, perception, or judgment, often evoking in them cognitive dissonance and other changes, including low self-esteem. Using denial, misdirection, contradiction, and misinformation, gaslighting involves attempts to destabilize the victim and delegitimize the victim's beliefs. Instances can range from the denial by an abuser that previous abusive incidents occurred, to belittling the victim's emotions and feelings, to the staging of bizarre events by the abuser with the intention of disorienting the victim. Copied from Wikipedia. Be cautious with Wikipedia data).

B9 When referencing God (Yahweh), blaspheming, denying His existence, blaming Him for all the evils that are a consequence of bad choices of ourselves or others.

B10 Often to cover-up and suppress a “problem,” murder is used.

B11 What other ways can you think of?

Dangers of suppressing truth

B1 When truth is suppressed, healing of a problem cannot begin.

B2 Acknowledging, admitting, confessing, asking forgiveness, and restitution are needed.

C1 A person still might be punished.

C2 Choices still have consequences which leave emotional, spiritual, relationship, etc. scars.

C3 James 5:16 ESV Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

C4 1 John 1:8-10 EMTV If we claim that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

B3 Admitting a emotional problem, abuse, molestation, addiction, etc. also starts with acknowledging the truth.

B4 Not admitting a problem with sin will lead to worse problems. Proverbs 29:1 NLT Whoever stubbornly refuses to accept criticism will suddenly be destroyed beyond recovery.

B5 In the history of Israel, many of the people complained about the way God treated them. God punished them by sending poisonous snakes. The way to be healed was to acknowledge the truth. Those who did not, died. The people needed to believe God. Numbers 21:8-9 ESV And the LORD said to Moses, "Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live." 9 So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.

B6 Exchanging truth for a lie. People do not believe the truth but instead believe a lie to be truth. Romans 1:25 CSB They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served what has been created instead of the Creator, who is praised forever. Amen.

C2 Here is the great evangelical disasterthe failure of the evangelical world to stand for truth as truth. There is only one word for thisnamely accommodation: the evangelical church has accommodated to the world spirit of the age. First, there has been accommodation on Scripture, so that many who call themselves evangelicals hold a weakened view of the Bible and no longer affirm the truth of all the Bible teachestruth not only in religious matters but in the areas of science and history and morality. Francis Schaeffer.

The ultimate source of truth is Jesus Christ: John 14:6 AFV Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me.

Romans 1:18 NRSV For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and wickedness of those who by their wickedness suppress the truth.

B1 God is angry about sin

B2 God is angry because of ungodliness and wickedness (breaking the 10 Commandments). God’s anger is not an out of control rant and tantrum. It is a just judge/king’s emotions over rebellion to His laws.

B3 God is angry that people use wickedness to suppress the truth

B4 This is the start of a downhill cascade of trouble for humanity

B5 There is no healing without acknowledging truth about God and ourselves. We need to give God credit for His amazing person and deeds, and to be thankful for His goodness. Romans 1:21 WEL So, when they knew God, they didn’t glorify him as God, nor were they thankful, they became foolish in their reasonings, and so their foolish heart was darkened.

A Few Thoughts About Matthew 18

Matthew 18 has been a difficult passage for interpreters. So, I give my few thoughts on this chapter.

The Lord Jesus is speaking to Jews. These Jews are disciples. Matthew 18:1a NIV At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked…

He is teaching them some of the principles, worldview, and lifestyle of the Kingdom of Heaven, which is the same as the King of God. Compare Matthew 4:17 with Mark 1:15, etc. This is a kingdom where God rules. Eventually, Jesus will reign in Jerusalem and the universe will be the Kingdom of God. (You might want to read What is the Kingdom of Heaven?) (I don’t know anything about Bruce Colbert, so be aware).

The first principle the Lord Jesus teaches (verses 1-7) is who is the greatest in the Kingdom of God? Jesus gives no names but a principle. A principle is a law, doctrine, or assumption on which action or behavior is based (Source). Humans tend to ask who is the greatest. Jesus makes it clear that it is not what makes humans great on earth but what God considers great. Some things that make one great in the Kingdom of Heaven:

  • Poor in Spirit, meekness, hunger and thirst for righteousness, merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers, suffer for righteousness sake in Matthew 5:3-12

  • Doing and teaching God’s rules and righteousness in Matthew 5:19-20

  • Doing the will of God in Matthew 7:21

  • Humility, trust, and faith in Matthew 18:1, 3-4

  • Not being a hypocrite in Matthew 23:13 also see 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 and Galatians 5:21

  • The highest priority in our life is God’s kingdom and His righteousness in Matthew 6:33

  • Not trusting in money but faith in God in Mark 10:23-25

  • Being faithful and steadfast in faith towards God in Luke 9:62

  • Being born again, the new birth, by God because of faith and trust in Him in John 3:3-5

  • Righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit in Romans 14:17

Jesus teaches further that if a person does something to a child causing them to not believe the Gospel, that person will receive a severe penalty. It would be better to have a millstone hung around their neck and thrown into the sea to drown. An example might be someone claiming to be a Christian, be it a pastor, a youth pastor, a church worker, Sunday School teacher or whatever. This person of respect molests that child, which causes them to reject Christ when they are older. Even though that pastor, etc. might think of themselves as being great, even though that pastor, etc. is acclaimed by the congregation, that person is spiritually dead and an evangelist for satan causing someone to NOT believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The next section (verses 8-10) deals with obstacles to believe the gospel. I have read of more than one person who had gifted hands, say a musician or surgeon, who would not believe the gospel. When they had some tragedy and lost a hand, they experienced financial and emotional stress. This brought a situation where their heart was softened to listen to the gospel.

Next in verses 11-14, Jesus teaches His desire, longing, and effort to seek those who are lost. All humans are lost and perishing because of sin except the sinless Jesus. He is the Lamb of God (John 1:29) and the Passover Lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7) who paid the penalty for our sins, suffered for our sins, and taking the punishment for our breaking God’s laws.

In verses 15-20, the Lord Jesus deals with the topic of a sinning believer. The word church indicates that Jesus does not speak of our present-day church, for it didn’t exist until Pentecost. So, it must refer to a group of believers. Jesus is addressing His disciples. He is teaching a principle of the Kingdom of Heaven, so it can be applied to the church today. The church today is believers, not an organization.

Note the word brother which refers to one of common belief, not necessarily common family. Also note the word witness. This is someone who has firsthand knowledge of some offense. The issue is hopefully dealt with when the offended person tells the offender of their sin. If they repent (ask forgiveness and never do it again), then all is well. This repenting person is living as a Christian. If that person does not repent, then bring other witnesses. If the offender repents, all is well. If he/she does not repent still, then bring it before the group. If he/she repents, all is well. If not, then that person must be treated as if they are not a non-Christian. They may be a Christian, but they are acting and living like a non-Christian, so must be treated as such. The non-repenting person is not to be treated with abuse but with the attitude of wanting them to confess their sin and repent. Compare 1 Corinthians chapter 5.

A word of caution. Abusing church leaders like to isolate the one who has been abused from any witnesses of support. These false teachers and their supporters then abuse the abused. This has happened many times. Always have someone with you preferably a lawyer. A child who has been molested must never have to experience this situation. Refer the molestation to law enforcement.

Some things to remember about this passage.

B1 There are false witnesses. Matthew 26:59-61 NLT Inside, the leading priests and the entire high council were trying to find witnesses who would lie about Jesus, so they could put him to death. 60 But even though they found many who agreed to give false witness, they could not use anyone's testimony. Finally, two men came forward 61 who declared, "This man said, 'I am able to destroy the Temple of God and rebuild it in three days.

B2 There are evil counseling methods where the abused/molested most face the accused alone or in front of “church leaders.” Avoid this at all costs. Always have a witness with you. Don’t be intimidated.

Verses 21-35 are about forgiveness and the one who can forgive. God is the only one who can forgive sin. There is no such thing as forgive and forget. The abused/molested have scars and are unable to forget. Such talk is the counsel of at best ignorant but more likely abusers themselves.

When we ask God to forgive our sins, He does, IF we are repent. Words are cheap. A person’s life speaks louder than words. For an example read about King Manasseh in 2 Kings 21 and 2 Chronicles 33. As God has forgiven us, we forgive others. Forgiveness means to not seek revenge. Reporting a crime is not revenge. Only God forgives sins. Sins leave scars on us and on those who were wronged. The devil does much harm by reminding us of our past sins. Compare the Apostle Paul as in Acts 22:4, 1 Corinthians 15:9, Galatians 1:13, and Philippians 3:6. Some interpret Paul’s thorn in the flesh to be satan’s reminding Paul of this.

God’s forgiveness can be revoked as in Matthew 18:32-35 NLT Then the king called in the man he had forgiven and said, 'You evil servant! I forgave you that tremendous debt because you pleaded with me. 33 Shouldn't you have mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?' 34 Then the angry king sent the man to prison to be tortured until he had paid his entire debt. 35 "That's what my heavenly Father will do to you if you refuse to forgive your brothers and sisters from your heart.

The Lord Jesus teaches the principles, and many times gives an illustration of that truth as we read in Matthew 18:21-35.

Questions:

B1 What does it mean to be great in the Kingdom of Heaven?

B2 How does one achieve that greatness?

B3 Why does God value character traits and attitudes instead of power, authority, prestige, and financial greatness?

B4 Why do people who are molested or abused often reject the Gospel?

B5 What should a person do who is molested or abused? Report it to law enforcement. It is a crime, and you’ll be doing your part to stop this evil person.

B6 Explain forgiveness of sins.

Proverbs 18:12 NLT Haughtiness goes before destruction; humility precedes honor.

Romans 8:13-14 AFV Because if you are living according to the flesh, you shall die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you shall live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God.

2 Peter 3:9 NRSV The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance.

Proverbs 21:2 GNB You may think that everything you do is right, but remember that the LORD judges your motives.

Psalms 25:8 GNB Because the LORD is righteous and good, he teaches sinners the path they should follow.

Devotions on Proverbs: Proverbs 1:8-19

B3 Proverbs 1:20-33

C1 Wisdom is personified pleading for those without wisdom to come and learn wisdom.

C2 Being wise in not automatically known.

C3 Parts

D1 Announcement and invitation in Proverbs 1:20-21.

D2 Her message in Proverbs 1:22-33

E1 People naturally love being simple. Proverbs 1:22

F1 Love is to desire and long for hence love in many different applications as spouse, family, friend, ideas, philosophy, etc. In our passage, it seems to refer to lifestyle and worldview.

F2 Simple: The basic verb idea is “be open, spacious, wide,” and might relate to the immature or simple one who is open to all kinds of enticement, not having developed a discriminating judgment as to what is right or wrong. (TWOT 1853a).

E2 Wisdom pleads for all to turn around, stop being that way, learn wisdom. Turn means to turn around, repent, turn from living in simpleness to return to God, etc. Proverbs 1:23 GW Turn to me when I warn you. I will generously pour out my spirit for you. I will make my words known to you.

E3 Rejection of wisdom in Proverbs 1:24-25 has consequences. A foolish past can be changed to a glorious future. Repeated rejection eventually results in lost opportunity to repent. This itself is a consequence of foolishness.

E4 The consequences of rejection in Proverbs 1:26-27. Choosing foolish decisions instead of wisdom leads to sad and painful consequences. It results in calamity, fear, desolation, destruction, distress, and anguish. Proverbs 1:26-27 GNB So when you get into trouble, I will laugh at you. I will make fun of you when terror strikes—27 when it comes on you like a storm, bringing fierce winds of trouble, and you are in pain and misery.

E5 Proverbs 1:28-31 gives the reason for not helping them. They repeatedly rejected wisdom and consequently made bad choices. They can’t blame God for what happened to them.

F1 Proverbs 16:16 GW How much better it is to gain wisdom than gold, and the gaining of understanding should be chosen over silver.

F2 Compare Moses in Hebrew 11:24-26.

F3 A few of the notes from Constable's Expository Bible Study Notes 2016 Edition Thomas L. Constable, Th.D.:

G1 Choices-the wise teachers bring us back to that familiar theme: the choice between wise behavior and foolish, between righteous conduct and wicked, has consequences that boggle the mind. [Note #71: Hubbard, p. 319.]

G2 The fool is one by his own fault, not by fate (vv. 30-31). [Note #72: Kidner, p. 60.] Wisdom laughs at the fool's calamity (v. 26), not because she is hard-hearted but because it is so absurd to choose folly (v. 26).

G3 The figure of laughing reveals the absurdity of choosing a foolish way of life and being totally unprepared for disaster. [Note #73: Ross, p. 910.]

E6 Being simple, that is, foolish always leads to bad outcomes. Proverbs 1:32-33 NCV Fools will die because they refuse to listen; they will be destroyed because they do not care. 33 But those who listen to me will live in safety and be at peace, without fear of injury.

C4 We learn the principle that when God initiates and offers, we do not resist.

C5 Wisdom comes from God, but we must read, study, apply. We will be tested.

C6 How can wisdom help us?

C7 Why do people resist God and His offer to know wisdom?

A Few Thoughts About Moderation

Defined: the avoidance of excesses or extremes, esp. in behavior. (Source)

Ecclesiastes 7:16-18 MKJV Do not be righteous overmuch, neither make yourself overwise; why destroy yourself? 17 Do not be very wicked, and do not be a fool; why should you die before your time? 18 It is good that you should take hold of this; yea, also from this do not withdraw your hand; for he who fears God shall come forth from all of them.

1 Peter 4:3-4 WEL For in times gone by, it may have satisfied us to have done the will of the Gentiles [non-Christians], when we led a life of sexual promiscuity, evil desires, drunkenness, carousings, drinking parties, and depraved idolatries. 4 They think it strange in that you don’t rush into the same excessive, unrestrained actions, [and so] start cursing you.

God allows and blesses many desires like food, sleep, shelter, etc., but there are parameters defining what is allowed and what is excess.

Having the knowledge of what is moderate and what is not. Then having wisdom to apply it. We only get this from study, application, and testing (experience).

Examples:

B1 Alcohol

C1 Principle is not to be drunk:

C2 Too much alcohol is condemned: Ephesians 5:18 WEL Do not be drunk with wine, which is living without restraint [literally profligacy], instead be filled with the Spirit.

C3 As medicine: 1 Timothy 5:23 GW Stop drinking only water. Instead, drink a little wine for your stomach because you are frequently sick.

B2 Pleasure, wine, luxury (olive oil):

C1 Principle: Be happy, content, joyous, glad, food, etc.

C2 Loving those things and being overindulgent is condemned: Proverbs 21:17 NLT Those who love pleasure become poor; those who love wine and luxury will never be rich.

C3 As rejoicing in God’s supply: Acts 14:17 NRSV yet he has not left himself without a witness in doing good—giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, and filling you with food and your hearts with joy.

B3 Sleep

C1 Principle: We need sleep

C2 Too much has consequences: Proverbs 6:9-11 NRSV How long will you lie there, O lazybones? When will you rise from your sleep? 10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, 11 and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want, like an armed warrior.

C3 Too little: Psalm 127:2 NLT It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones.

C4 Some sleep is good and needful: Jeremiah 31:26 NET Then they will say, 'Under these conditions I can enjoy sweet sleep when I wake up and look around.'"

Principles

B1 Self-control

C1 A character trait we must have. May God teach and help us.

C2 A character trait we must teach our children.

C3 Some examples:

D1 Proverbs 29:11 NRSV A fool gives full vent to anger, but the wise quietly holds it back.

D2 Galatians 5:22-23 NRSV By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things.

D3 2 Peter 1:5-8 NIV For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

B2 The one thing we must not use moderation: Revelation 3:15-16 EMTV I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were cold or hot. 16 Therefore, since you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of My mouth.

Questions:

B1 How would you respond to someone who is argumentative and in your face?

B2 How would you deal with these: hunger, work, road rage, difficult government employee, sickness?

B3 What principle can we learn from these verses:

C1 Romans 14:21 ESV It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble.

C2 1 Peter 4:9 NRSV Be hospitable to one another without complaining.

C3 1 Corinthians 10:31 NIV So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

Note: a few comments on Ecclesiastes 7:16-18

B1 over righteous. A list of how to be over righteous from BI-OT:

C1 It sometimes reveals itself in doctrinal fastidiousness.

C2 It reveals itself in morbid introspectiveness.

C3 It reveals itself in an exacting conscientiousness.

C4 This strained piety not rarely reveals itself in the inordinate culture of some special virtue.

C5 It reveals itself in striving after impracticable standards of character.

B2 Lange writes on this passage: Clearly a warning against that strictly exact, but hypocritical and external righteousness of those predecessors of the Pharisees to whom the preceding verse referred

Devotions on Proverbs Proverbs 1:8-19

B3 Proverbs 1:8-19

C1 Here we read the general principle to avoid sin, to avoid seduction of sin by friends, pastors, leaders, politicians, family, etc.

C2 Choices have consequences.

C3 The foundation of seduction is a lie and sinful desire.

C4 The hook of seduction is something sounds too good to be true. This is so in relationships (love bombing), advertisements, salespeople, politicians, job interviews, etc.

C5 Eventually, all becomes known. God knows and will punish sin. Matthew 10:26 GNB So do not be afraid of people. Whatever is now covered up will be uncovered, and every secret will be made known.

C6 Questions

D1 Verse 19 is the summary verse. What is the main principle we must know?

D2 Name 3 applications of this principle.

D3 With reference to the 10 commandments (Exodus 20), what are some of the commandments that are disobeyed in this passage?

A Few Thoughts About Proverbs 1:1-7

Chapters 1-9

B1 General Instruction about wisdom

B2 Chapter 1:1-7 Why study Proverbs?

C1 Teaching—note the verbs—to

D1 To know wisdom and instruction

E1 Wisdom is knowing the facts and using and applying them in a godly way

E2 Instruction is obtaining facts

D2 To perceive words of understanding. Rote memory is not enough. We must understand what it means, and how to use it appropriately.

D3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, Justice, judgment, and equity

E1 These things that we must learn are either worldly or spiritual.

E2 1 Corinthians 3:19 NLT For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say, "He traps the wise in the snare of their own cleverness.

E3 James 3:13-18 NLT If you are wise and understand God's ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don't cover up the truth with boasting and lying. 15 For jealousy and selfishness are not God's kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. 16 For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind. 17 But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. 18 And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.

D4 To give

E1 The simple (naive) prudence.

F1 We must prepare our children, so we must be prepared as Christians to teach these things.

F2 Prudence is knowing and using good judgment/good sense.

E2 The young and inexperienced knowledge and discretion

F1 Discretion is making plans and knowing the best way to achieve that goal. Often these things come from experience of success and failure. We study the Proverbs to learn from others experience. God teaches us how to choose and act wise.

F2 For all, but especially for the young and inexperienced who may be easily led astray.

F3 1 Psalms 19:7 GNB The law of the LORD is perfect; it gives new strength. The commands of the LORD are trustworthy, giving wisdom to those who lack it.

D5 To increase these things in a wise person in what they mean and how to use it.

E1 Further facts and applications

E2 Wise counsel

E3 Proverbs and parables

E4 Sayings and riddles

D6 Summary

E1 Fear of the Lord is beginning of knowledge

F1 Respecting His authority knowing that He can discipline.

F2 Jamieson, Fausset and Brown Commentary:

The grand inference of the whole book.

Fear God—The antidote to following creature idols, and “vanities,” whether self-righteousness (Ecclesiastes 7:16, Ecclesiastes 7:18), or wicked oppression and other evils (Ecclesiastes 8:12, Ecclesiastes 8:13), or mad mirth (Ecclesiastes 2:2; Ecclesiastes 7:2-5), or self-mortifying avarice (Ecclesiastes 8:13, Ecclesiastes 8:17), or youth spent without God (Ecclesiastes 11:9; Ecclesiastes 12:1).

this is the whole duty of man—literally, “this is the whole man,” the full ideal of man, as originally contemplated, realized wholly by Jesus Christ alone; and, through Him, by saints now in part, hereafter perfectly (1 John 3:22-24; Revelation 22:14).

E2 Fools despise wisdom and instruction

C2 Application

D1 We do not have this knowledge and ability to apply it innately.

D2 We must be taught. Psalms 119:130 MKJV The entrance of Your Words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.

D3 We must learn how to assess, understand, and apply to help ourselves and others.

D4 We must continually motivate ourselves and others to achieve more.

D5 It is better to learn from others rather than make a poor choice and suffer the consequences.

D6 Proverbs is not so much about rules as it is about principles that we can apply in many circumstances.

A Few Thoughts About Colossians 2:2-3

Colossians 2:2-3 WEL That their hearts may be comforted by being knit together in love and into the all the riches of the full assurance of understanding, into the full knowledge of the mystery of the God, even of Father and of the Christ 3 In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Definitions

B1 Assurance

C1 The Greek word is πληροφορία plērophoría.

C2 It means full assurance and confidence.

C3 Two examples of the same word

D1 Hebrews 10:22 ISV let us continue to come near with sincere hearts in the full assurance that faith provides, because our hearts have been sprinkled clean from a guilty conscience, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.

D2 1 Thessalonians 1:5 NLT For when we brought you the Good News, it was not only with words but also with power, for the Holy Spirit gave you full assurance that what we said was true. And you know of our concern for you from the way we lived when we were with you.

C3 Example

D1 We have faith that Jesus is the Messiah. This is most reasonable.

D2 We have faith, we believe, that Jesus will return for us. This is most reasonable.

D3 We have hope that this will happenmaybe, even today. This is reasonable.

D4 We have assurance from the character, teaching, and life of Jesus.

E1 That what He told us is the truth (authenticated by the miracles He did in His earthly ministry).

E2 That His promises are true.

E3 This is the solid ground we can stand on. It is the proof (most reasonably so) of what He taught. We can rest. We can have peace. We have the full assurance of understanding. It is not hidden. It is revealed.

B2 Understanding

C1 The Greek word is σύνεσις sýnesis.

C2 It means full understanding, that is, not just the facts but whythe principles of why the facts work a certain way. It is usually used as spiritual insight. See Mounce here and Mounce's Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words, Copyright © 2006 by William D. Mounce.

C3 Two example of the same word.

D1 Luke 2:47 EMTV And those who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and His answers.

D2 2 Timothy 2:7 GNB Think about what I am saying, because the Lord will enable you to understand it all.

C4 Paul wants them to have a solid faith based on truth and the revealed teaching about Jesus and what Jesus taught in His ministry. It is not hidden. Compare: Luke 10:21 NLT At that same time Jesus was filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit, and he said, "O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way.

B3 Full knowledge

C1 The Greek word is ἐπίγνωσις epígnōsis.

C2 It means precise and correct knowledge (Thayer), acquaintance, discernment, recognition (Abbott-Smith).

C3 Two examples of the same word.

D1 Philippians 1:9 LSV and this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in full knowledge, and all discernment. Robertson comments on this

May abound (περισσευηι — perisseuēi). Present active subjunctive of περισσευω — perisseuō may keep on overflowing, a perpetual flood of love, “yet more and more” (ετι μαλλον και μαλλον — eti mallon kai mallon), but with necessary limitations (river banks), “in knowledge” (εν επιγνωσει — en epignōsei in full knowledge) “and all discernment” (πασηι αιστησει — pāsēi aisthēsei). The delicate spiritual perception (αιστησις — aisthēsis old word from αιστανομαι — aisthanomai only here in N.T. as the verb only in Luke 9:45 in N.T.) can be cultivated as in αιστητηριον — aisthētērion (Hebrews 5:14)

D2 2 Timothy 3:7 ESV always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.

C4 Paul wants them (and us) to have full knowledge about God, even the Father and the Son. This would be God’s character traits, worldview, lifestyle, plans, rules, etc. We can know.

B4 Mystery

C1 The Greek word is μυστήριον mystḗrion.

C2 It means things that are hidden as thoughts, plans, knowledge. For, the natural human cannot know these things about God without God initiating it. It is why Jesus came into the world.

C3 Two uses of the word:

D1 Matthew 13:11 NIV He replied, "Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.

D2 1 Corinthians 2:6-9 NLT Yet when I am among mature believers, I do speak with words of wisdom, but not the kind of wisdom that belongs to this world or to the rulers of this world, who are soon forgotten. 7 No, the wisdom we speak of is the mystery of God--his plan that was previously hidden, even though he made it for our ultimate glory before the world began. 8 But the rulers of this world have not understood it; if they had, they would not have crucified our glorious Lord. 9 That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him."

B5 Wisdom

C1 The Greek word is σοφία sophía.

C2 It means σοφία (sophia), GK 5053 (S 4678), 51x. sophia is a word meaning “wisdom.” It denotes the capacity to not only understand something (Acts 7:22) but also to act accordingly (Col 1:9; 4:5). It is the latter that separates wisdom from knowledge. (Mounce)

C3 Two examples of its use.

D1 Natural human wisdom: Acts 7:22 NLT Moses was taught all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was powerful in both speech and action.

D2 Colossians 1:9 NLT So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding.

B6 Knowledge

C1 The Greek word is γνῶσις gnōsis.

C2 It means knowledge, that is, knowing facts.

C3 Two examples of the word.

D1 Only God has perfect knowledge. We can know if we study the Bible and ask Him. Romans 11:33 GNB How great are God's riches! How deep are his wisdom and knowledge! Who can explain his decisions? Who can understand his ways?

D2 Concerning Jesus: Philippians 3:8-9 GNB Not only those things; I reckon everything as complete loss for the sake of what is so much more valuable, the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have thrown everything away; I consider it all as mere garbage, so that I may gain Christ 9 and be completely united with him. I no longer have a righteousness of my own, the kind that is gained by obeying the Law. I now have the righteousness that is given through faith in Christ, the righteousness that comes from God and is based on faith.

B7 The difference between knowledge and wisdom is this. Knowledge is a list of the facts. Wisdom is how to use the facts to build, teach, live, etc. There is human wisdom, which will be destroyed, and God’s wisdom, which is eternal. God has complete and perfect knowledge (omniscience) and wisdom (omnisapience).

Some thoughts

B1 Paul fears that the Colossian believers will be swayed by the false views of the Gnostics and other esoteric teachers.

C1 Fears that they might be swayed by the false promises of secret wisdom that only their few teachers have.

C2 Fears that they might be swayed by the false promise, “Come and join us to learn the true wisdom that can only be learned by listening to our teachers.”

C3 What we need to learn is that there are still this type of teachers.

D1 “You cannot learn the true interpretation of Scripture unless you join us, listen to our teachers, and buy our books.”

D2 “You cannot learn by studying on your own.”

D3 “You must be passive, in the silence, bypassing your brain, seeking the presence of God who will give you true knowledge and guide. You cannot get this from a book [that is the Bible, what they term is the old manna], you have to listen to our teachers and get the fresh manna directly from God.”

B2 Paul teaches these believers and us that we CAN know the mystery of God, even of Father and the Messiah. It is not hidden. It is revealed. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 EMTV All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be proficient, having been thoroughly equipped for every good work.

B3 From Expositor's Bible Commentary (Abridged Edition): New Testament: This Christ is now described as the One "in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." This statement contains two thoughts. (1) All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are in Christ. The false teachers claimed to have, through their relation with a supposed hierarchy of supernatural beings, a higher knowledge than that possessed by ordinary believers. Against this, Paul argues that all wisdom and knowledge are in Christ and that their treasures are accessible to every believer. (2) The treasures of wisdom are in Christ in a hidden way. "Hidden" does not, however, mean that they are concealed but rather that they are laid up or stored away as a treasure.

We can have confidence of what we read and learn from the Scriptures in its plain, normal sense can lead us to live a richer Christian life having the worldview, lifestyle, and attitudes that please our Lord Jesus.

Hebrews Chapters 9-13 WEL

Hebrews Chapter 9

The Earthly Tabernacle

1 Now truly, even the first [covenant] had regulations for worship and an earthly holy place.

2 For a tent was completely prepared. The outer part [had] in it the candlestick, the table, and the showbread. This is the Holy Place.

3 Behind the second curtain of the tent is [the place] called the Holy of Holies,

4 Having the golden alter of incense and the ark of the covenant, which was totally covered with gold [containing] the golden jar that held manna, Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant.

5 Over it [were] the cherubim of glory whose shadow covered the mercy seat concerning which we cannot now speak in detail.

6 Now after these things were completely prepared, the priests always went into the outer tent doing the service [of God].

7 But only the high priest [goes] into the inner tent and then only once a year, and never without blood which he brought for himself and for the errors of the people.

8 The Holy Spirit making it evident that while the first tent was still standing the way into the Holy of Holies was not yet open.

9 This was a symbol for the present time, in which both gifts and sacrifices that are offered cannot make the conscience of the one who serves perfect,

10 Since [they dealt with] only foods, drinks, various washings, and regulations [for the] body imposed [on them] until the time things would be straightened out.

Jesus Is Priest of Heavenly Tabernacle

11 But now Christ has come as a High Priest of the good things to come through a greater and more perfect tent, not made with hands, that is, not of this creation.

12 He entered the Holy of Holies only one time, not with the blood of goats and calves but through his own blood, to obtain eternal redemption.

13 For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on the ceremonially unclean [people], for [the purpose of] sanctifying the flesh, makes [them] ceremonially clean,

14 Then how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? [Compare 1 Peter 3:21]

15 For this reason, he is the mediator of the new covenant, so that those who are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance by a death for redemption from the violations under the first covenant.

16 For where there is a will, there must also be the death of the testator.

17 For a will [is] in force after death, seeing that it is not binding while the testator lives.

18 That is why not even the first [covenant] was initiated without blood.

19 For after Moses had spoken every rule to all the people as the law commanded, he took the blood of calves and goats, along with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop and sprinkled both the book and all the people.

20 He said, “This [is] the blood of the covenant which God has commanded you.”

21 Likewise, he sprinkled blood both on the tent and all the utensils of the religious service.

22 In fact, according to the law nearly everything is cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood, [there] is no forgiveness.

23 Therefore, it was necessary that the copies of the heavenly things should be purified with these but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

24 For Christ did not enter into the Holy of Holies of human construction, [which is] a copy of the original, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us,

25 Not, however, that he should offer himself frequently, like the high priest enters the Holy of Holies every year with blood not his own,

26 For then he would have had to suffer many times from the foundation of the world. But now at the end of the world, he has appeared one time to annul sin by the sacrifice of himself.

27 As it is appointed for people to die one time, and after that The Judgment,

28 So Christ was offered one time to bear the sins of many, and for those who look for him, he will appear the second time not to deal with sin but for salvation.

Hebrews Chapter 10

Earthly Sacrifices Do Not Cleanse Sin

1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, not the thing itself, can never with those sacrifices, which they continually offer year after year, make those who come perfect.

2 For wouldn’t they have stopped being offered? Because once purified, those serving should have no more consciousness of sins.

3 But in those [sacrifices there is] a recollection of sins every year,

4 Because [it is] impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

Messiah’s Sacrifice Cleanses From Sin

5 For this reason when he came into the world, he said, “Sacrifice and offering is not what you want, but you have prepared a body for me.

6 “You were not pleased with burnt offerings or sin-offerings.

7 “Then I said, ‘Look! I am here (in the scroll of the book it is written about me) to do your will, O God.’” [Compare Psalm 40]

8 When he said above, “Sacrifice, offering, burnt offerings, and sin-offerings you didn’t want nor were pleased [with them].” ([Referring] to those offered by the law).

9 He then said, “See, I have come to do your will, O God.” He abolishes the first, so that he may establish the second.

10 By that will we have been sanctified from the guilt of sin through the one-time sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ.

11 Every priest stands day after day doing service and offering the same sacrifices over and over, which can never take away sins.

12 He [Jesus] himself, however, after he had offered one permanent sacrifice for sins, sat down on the right hand of God,

13 From then on waiting until his enemies are made his footstool.

14 For by one sacrifice, he has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

15 The Holy Spirit is also a witness to us, because after what he had said previously,

16 “This [is] the covenant that I will make with them after those days,’ says the Lord, ‘I will put my laws into their heart, and I write them in their minds,

17 “’And I will no longer remember their sins and lawless actions.’” [Jeremiah 31:33-34]

18 Now where [there is] forgiveness of these, there [is] no more sacrifice for sin.

Messiah’s Blood Was the Acceptable Sacrifice

19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter into the Holy of Holies by the blood of Jesus,

20 By a new and living way which he has initiated for us through the curtain, that is, his flesh,

21 [Having] a High Priest over the house of God,

22 Let us come near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, [because] our hearts have been sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

23 Let us tightly hold on to the confession of hope without wavering, for the one who promised is faithful.

24 Let us keep considering one another in order to stimulate love and good works.

25 Do not forsake our meeting together as [is] the practice of some, but encourage [each other] and more so as you see the Day coming,

Our Faith Must Continue

26 Because, if we keep on sinning deliberately after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there doesn’t remain any more sacrifice for sins,

27 Only a certain fearful expectation of judgment and indignation of fire which will devour the adversaries.

28 Anyone who despised Moses’ law died without compassion on the testimony of two or three witnesses.

29 How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserving the one who has spurned the Son of God and has considered the blood of the covenant, with which he was sanctified, an unholy thing and has insulted the Spirit of grace?

30 For we know him who has said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay,” says the Lord. And in addition, “The Lord will judge his people.” [Deuteronomy 32:35-36]

31 [It is] a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32 But remember the past days, in which, after you were enlightened, you endured a great struggle of hardship.

33 At times, you were viewed with scorn, both with insults and persecutions, and at times, you were associated with those who were treated this way.

34 For you had compassion on me in my imprisonment and with joy allowed the stealing of your possessions, knowing in yourselves that you have better and enduring possessions in heaven.

35 Therefore, do not throw away your boldness, which has great reward.

36 You need perseverance, so that, after doing God’s will, you will receive the promise.

37 For besides, in a little while, he, who will come, will come, and will not delay.

38 Now the just will live by faith, but if he turns back, my soul will not be pleased with him. [Habakkuk 2:3-4]

39 But we are not those who turn back into eternal ruin but of those who have faith for preserving the soul.

Hebrews Chapter 11

Faith Defined and Examples

1 Now faith is the foundation of the things we hope for, the evidence of the things we cannot see.

2 For by it the elders received a good testimony.

3 It is through faith that we understand that the universe was established into systematic order by the word of God, so that the things that we see did not come into existence from things that are visible.

4 By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he gave witness that he was righteousGod testifying about his offering. By it―even though he is dead―he continues to speak.

5 By faith Enoch was taken away without experiencing death and was not found, because God had taken him away, and before he was taken away, he had the testimony that he pleased God.

6 For without faith, [it is] impossible to please [God], because the one who comes to God must believe that he exists and is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him.

7 By faith Noah was warned by God concerning things never seen yet. So, fearing [God] he built an ark for the saving of his family. By this, he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness, which comes by faith.

8 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place which he would later receive as an inheritance, obeyed and left, even though he did not know where he was going.

9 By faith he lived as a foreigner in the Promised Land living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise,

10 Because he looked for a city whose designer and builder is God, [a city] with foundations.

11 By faith Sarah also received the miracle to conceive offspring and delivered a child when she was too old, because she considered him faithful who had promised.

12 Therefore, there was born from one, and him as good as dead, as many as the multitude of stars of the sky and like the innumerable sands of the seashore.

13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises but anticipating them. They were convinced about them, welcomed [them], and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

14 Now, they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.

15 Truly, if they kept thinking about the [country] from where they came, they would have the chance to return.

16 But now they desire a better [country], that is, a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for indeed, he has prepared a city for them.

17 By faith, Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac. He who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

18 Of whom it was said, “That through Isaac will be descendants be named.”

19 Reasoning that God was able to raise [him], even from the dead, from where, figuratively speaking, he did receive him.

20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.

21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed both sons of Joseph and worshiped [leaning] on the top of his staff.

22 By faith Joseph, when he was dying, mentioned the departure of the children of Israel and gave instructions concerning his bones.

23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw a beautiful child, and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.

24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter,

25 Having preferred to suffer affliction with the people of God instead of enjoying the pleasures of sin for a short time,

26 Considering being insulted for the sake of Christ to be greater riches than the treasures in Egypt, because he kept focusing on the future reward.

27 By faith he left Egypt without fearing the king’s wrath, because he was unshakable as if seeing him who is invisible.

28 By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, lest he who destroyed the firstborn would touch them.

29 By faith they passed through the Red Sea as if on dry land, which when the Egyptians attempted to do drowned.

30 By faith the walls of Jericho collapsed, after they went around them seven days.

31 By faith Rahab, the harlot, was not killed with those who refused to believe, because she had received the spies with peace.

32 What more can I say? There is not enough time for me to speak about Gideon, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets.

33 Who, through faith, overcame kingdoms, did what was right, received the promises, shut lion’s mouths,

34 Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned back foreign armies.

35 Women received their dead raised to life again. Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, so they might obtain a better resurrection.

36 Others experienced derision and whipping, and after that chains and the dungeon.

37 They were stoned; they were sawn in two, were cruelly tempted, and were slain with the sword. They wandered around in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, afflicted, [and] tormented.

38 (Of whom the world was not worthy), they wandered in deserts and mountains; [they lived] in caves and holes in the earth.

39 These all, having received a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise.

40 God having provided something better for us, in order that they would not become perfect without us.

Hebrews Chapter 12

Let Us Persevere To The End

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded with such a great throng of witnesses, let us get rid of every hindrance and the sin that so easily entangles us, and let us run with perseverance the race that lies before us.

2 Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and finisher of [our] faith, who instead of the joy setting before him patiently persevered the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of God’s throne.

3 Therefore, carefully think about him who persevered such a contradiction of sinners against him, lest you become weary and faint in your souls.

God’s Discipline

4 You have not yet resisted, striving against sin, to the point of bloodshed.

5 Have you forgotten the encouragement which speaks to you like children? “My child do not despise the Lord’s training, nor despair when rebuked by him.

6 “For whom the Lord loves, he trains and punishes.” [Proverbs 3:11-12]

7 If you calmly endure discipline, God treats you as children, because what child is [there] whom the father doesn’t discipline?

8 But if you are without any training, of which all are partakers, then you are illegitimate, not children.

9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who trained [us], and we gave [them] great respect. Will we not much more be under the authority to the Father of our spirits and live?

10 Truly, they disciplined us for only a few days according to what seemed best to them, but he for our benefit, so that we may be partakers of his holiness.

11 Now no training at the time seems joyous but joyless, nevertheless, after it is all over, it produces the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it.

12 For this reason, lift the hands which hang down and those feeble knees,

13 And make straight paths for your feet, lest what is lame become dislocated, instead let it be healed.

Warning To Not Falter

14 Pursue peace with all, as well as holiness. Without [holiness] no one will see the Lord.

15 Beware lest anyone comes short of God’s grace, that no root of bitterness springing up troubles [you] and through it many become defiled,

16 Lest any be a fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for a single meal gave away his birthright.

17 For you know that afterwards when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected, because he could find no opportunity to reverse [what had happened] even though he sought it carefully with tears.

We Do Not Come To The Mountain of Fear

18 For you have not come to a physical mountain with its burning fire, blackness, gloom, violent winds,

19 Trumpet blast, and spoken words, which when they heard, the hearers begged that the message wouldn’t be spoken to them anymore.

20 For they could not tolerate what was commanded, “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be killed by stoning or spearing.” [Exodus 20:19]

21 So terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I’m terrified and shaking.” [Exodus 19:13]

We Come To The Mountain of Joy

22 But you have come to Mount Zion, to the City of the Living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable group of angels,

23 To the joyful gathering and assembly of the firstborn (whose names are written in heaven), to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just people made perfect,

24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and the sprinkling of blood that speaks better than Abel’s.

Do Not Reject God’s Warning

25 Beware, that you don’t refuse him who speaks, because if they didn’t escape him who spoke on earth, how much more will we not escape if we turn away from him who [speaks] from heaven.

26 His voice shook the world then, but now he has promised, “Yet once more, I [will] shake, not only the earth, but also heaven.” [Exodus 19:18 and Haggai 2:6]

27 Now this quote, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of shakable things that are made, so that those things which cannot be shaken will stay in place.

28 Therefore, receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us keep holding on to grace through which we can serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear,

29 Because our God [is] a consuming fire.

Hebrews Chapter 13

Various Rules and Requests

1 Let brotherly love continue.

2 Do not forget to be hospitable to strangers, because in doing so some have unknowingly been hospitable to angels.

3 Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them. [Remember] those who are mistreated, as though your body is being [mistreated] also.

4 Let marriage be honored by all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

5 Let your conduct be without covetousness. Be satisfied with what you have, because he has said, “I will never leave you, nor forsake you.” [Deuteronomy 31:6, Joshua 1:5, and 1 Chronicles 28:20]

6 So then, we can boldly say, “The Lord is my helper,” and “I will not be afraid of what anyone will do to me.“ [Psalm 37:25, Psalm 27:1, and Psalm 118:6]

7 Remember those leading you, who spoke the word of God to you. Imitate their faith. Carefully think about the outcome of their way of life.

8 Jesus Christ [is] the same yesterday, today, and forever!

9 Do not be carried away with various and strange teachings. For [it is] a good thing that the heart be stabilized by grace, not with foods that have not benefited those who follow [those rules].

10 We have an altar from which, those serving The Tabernacle, have no right to eat.

11 For the bodies of those animals, whose blood is brought into the Holy Place by the High Priest for sin, are burned outside the camp.

12 For this reason, Jesus also, so he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered outside the gate.

13 Therefore, let us go out to him, outside the camp, and sharing his reproach.

14 For here we have no permanent city, but we are looking for one to come.

15 Therefore, through him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of [our] lips confessing [this] to his name.

16 Do not forget to do good and share, because with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

17 Be persuadable by those who lead you and yield yourselves, because they watch over your souls as those who must give an answer [and] so that they may do it with joy and not grieving, because that would not be profitable for you.

18 Pray for us, because we are confident that we have a good conscience and are always wanting to live doing what is right.

19 I beg [you] even more to do this, so that I may be quickly restored to you.

Blessing and Prayer

20 Now may the God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,

21 Bring you to perfection in every good work to do his will, doing in you that which is well pleasing in his sight through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever.

22 Brothers, I urge you to allow this message of encouragement, for I have written to you a brief letter.

23 Know that [our] brother Timothy is set free; with whom, if he comes soon, I will see you.

24 Greet your leaders and all the saints. Those from Italy greet you.

25 Grace [be] with all of you. Amen.
