Preface to the Welcome Bible

My Greek is weak, having only 2 years of Greek study, but with Greek and other languages helps.
It is offered to all freely.
I have worked on this since the late 1990s and continue revising it.
It came about due to my younger children having difficulty understanding the text.
It is based on the Textus Receptus and the Majority Text as edited by Dr. Wilbur Pickering et al.
Brackets [] are used to enclose text that is added to clarify the sense.
Occasionally, italics are used to indicate a questionable valid text in the Greek, as Matthew 3:11 and fire.
I have prayed and continually sought to be aware of doctrinal or other biases that would influence the choice of a word. But, all work by humans is tainted.

Hebrews Chapter 1

Jesus Is God

1 God, who in times past spoke by the prophets to the fathers at various times and in various ways,

2 Has in these last days spoken to us by [His] Son, whom he has appointed heir of all things and through whom he made the worlds.

3 [The Son], being the brilliant shining of [His] glory and of the same essence, and maintaining everything by his powerful word, after—by himself—making purification of our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty of high,

4 Being so much better than the angels as he has inherited a more excellent name than they.

Superior To Angels

5 For to which of the angels did he ever say, “You are my son, this day I have begotten you?” [Psalm 2:7] And again, “I will be a Father to him, and he will be a Son to me?”

6 Again, when he brings in the first born into the world, he says, “Let all the angels of God worship him.” [Deuteronomy 32:43 LXX]

7 But about the angels he says, “Who makes his angels spirits and his attendants a flame of fire.” [Psalm 104:4]

8 But to the Son [he says], “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of your kingdom.

9 “You have loved righteousness and hated breaking the law, therefore, God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness far above your peers.” [Psalm 45:6-7]

10 And, “You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.

11 “They will perish, but you remain. All of them will become worn out like garment,

12 “Like outer clothing you will fold them up, and they will be changed, but you are the same, and your years do not end.” [Psalm 102:25-27]

13 To which of the angels did He ever say, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool?” [Psalm 110:4]

14 Are not all ministering spirits sent out to help those who will be heirs of salvation?

Hebrews Chapter 2

Jesus Provides the Only Salvation

1 Therefore we must pay closer attention to the things that we have heard, lest we drift away.

2 For if the message spoken by angels was proven true, and every violation and disobedience received a just repayment,

3 How will we escape, if we disregard such a salvation, which first began to be proclaimed by the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard him.

4 God also bore witness, both with signs and miracles, and with different types of power and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will.

Jesus Is Fully Human and His Purpose

5 For he has not made the world to come—of which we speak—under the authority of angels.

6 But someone somewhere gave his witness saying, “What is man, that you would remember him, or the son of man that you would come and help him.

7 “You made him a little lower than the angels; you adorn him with glory and honor; you set him over the works of your hands.

8 “You put everything under his feet.” [Psalm 8:4-6] For to put all under his authority, [means] he left out nothing that is unable to be under his authority, but now we do not see everything under his authority.

9 But we can look at Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, so that he by the grace of God might taste death for everyone, [now] crowned with glory and honor.

10 In bringing many sons to glory, it was right for him—for whom are all things and by whom are all things—to perfect the leader of their salvation through sufferings.

11 For both the one who sanctifies and those being sanctified are all from one, for this reason he is not ashamed to call them brothers.

12 He says, “I will declare your name to my brothers. In the midst of the church, I will sing praise to you.” [Psalm 22:22]

13 Again, “I will put my confidence in him.” And again, “Look, I and the children whom God has given me.” [Isaiah 8:18]

14 So then, as the children have flesh and blood in common, so he also likewise took of the same, so that through death he might inactivate the one who had the power of death, that is, the Devil

15 And deliver those who through fear of death were all their lifetime held in bondage.

16 Truly, he didn’t come to help angels. He came to help the descendants of Abraham.

17 Therefore, it was necessary in all things to become like his brethren, so that he could be a merciful and faithful high priest before God, to make atonement for the sins of the people,

18 Because he has himself suffered from being tempted, he is able to help those who are now tempted.

Hebrews Chapter 3

Jesus Is Superior to Moses

1 As a result, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our common confession, Christ Jesus.

2 He was faithful to him who appointed him, just like Moses [was faithful] in all of God’s house.

3 For this man is entitled to greater honor than Moses, in the same way as one who builds the house has greater honor than the house.

4 For every house is built by someone, but he who built everything is God.

5 Truly Moses was faithful as a servant in all of God’s house as a witness for those things spoken about later,

6 But Christ as a son over his own house. We are his house, if we tightly hold on to our boldness and rejoicing of hope firmly to the end.

Jesus Warning About Unbelief

7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you will listen to his voice,

8 “Do not harden your hearts, as in ’The Provocation,’ the day of testing in the wilderness,

9 “When your fathers challenged me, questioned my credibility, and saw my works for forty years.

10 “Therefore, I was totally disgusted with that generation and said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not really known my ways.’

11 “So I swore in my wrath, ’They will never enter my rest.’” [Psalm 95:7-11]

12 Be careful, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God.

13 Urge one another every day while it is still “Today,” lest any of you become hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

14 For we have been made partakers of Christ, if we hold on to the beginning of our confidence firmly to the end.

15 That’s why it is said, “Today—if you will listen to his voice—do not harden your hearts as in ’The Provocation.’”

16 For some, after they had heard, did provoke to anger, but not everyone who came out of Egypt with Moses.

17 But with whom was he exasperated with for forty years? Wasn’t it with those who had sinned, whose carcasses fell in the wilderness?

18 Or to whom was it that he swore that they wouldn’t enter into his rest? Wasn’t it with those who refused to believe?

19 So we see that they could not enter because of unbelief.

Hebrews Chapter 4

God’s Promised Rest Is Coming

1 Therefore, let us be very careful, lest, since the promise of entering his rest still remains, any of you perhaps will fall short of it.

2 For the Good News was spoken to us as well as to them, but the message heard [by them] did not benefit them, [because it was] not united with faith in those who heard it,

3 Yet, we who have believed enter rest, just like he said, “As I have sworn in my wrath, those people will never enter into my rest,” even though the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

4 For he spoke in a certain place about the seventh day this way, “And God rested the seventh day from all his works.” [Genesis 4:4]

5 Again here, “If they will enter into my rest...”

6 So then, it follows for some to enter into it, and those to whom it was first spoken did not enter because of obstinate unbelief.

7 Moreover, he designates a certain day, today—saying through David after such a long time—to quote it exactly, “Today—if you will listen to his voice—do not harden your hearts.”

8 If Joshua had given them rest, then [God] afterward wouldn’t have spoken about another day.

9 Therefore, there remains a rest for the people of God.

10 For one who enters his rest also ceases from his own works, just as God did from his.

11 Therefore, let us be diligent to enter into that rest, in order that no one would fall in the same obstinate unbelief.

12 For the Word of God is living, powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to separate the soul and spirit, and joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

13 Nor is there anything in creation that is not transparent in his sight, but all things are uncovered and opened to the eyes of him to whom we must give an account [of ourselves].

Jesus Is The High Priest

14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who is gone into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold on tightly to what we believe,

15 For we don’t have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses but was in every way tempted like us, yet without any sin.

16 Therefore, let us come boldly to the throne of grace, so that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in the time of need.

Hebrews Chapter 5

1 All high priests taken from among men are appointed for people in things [pertaining] to God, so that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins,

2 Being able to be gentle to those who are ignorant and those who have wandered away, for he himself is also encompassed with weakness.

3 For this reason, he must bring an offering for his own sins just as he does for the people.

4 No man takes this honor for himself, instead [it is for] him who is called by God, like Aaron.

5 So also, Christ didn’t glorify himself to be made high priest, instead [it was] he who said to him, “You are my Son. Today, I have begotten you.” [Psalm 2:7]

6 As he also says in another place, “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.” [Psalm 110:4]

7 [Christ] in the days of his flesh, when he had offered requests and urgent appeals for help with intense cries and tears to him who was able to save him from death was heard because he feared.

8 Even though he was a son, yet he learned obedience through the things which he suffered.

9 Having finished all this, he became the author of eternal salvation to those who obey him,

10 Having been verbally designated by God a high priest in the order of Melchizedek.

Warning Not To Fall From the Faith

11 About whom we have many things to say and difficult to explain, since you have become too lazy to listen.

12 Also at the time you should be teachers, you need someone to reteach you the basics of the word of God and have become as those who need milk and not solid food.

13 For everyone who uses milk is inexperienced with the word of righteousness, because he is a baby.

14 But solid food belongs to those who are mature having their spiritual senses exercised through use to discern both good and evil.

Hebrews Chapter 6

Encouragement to Grow Doctrine

1 So then, leaving the discussion about the basic principles about Christ, let us go on to maturity, not laying the foundation again of repentance from dead works and of faith in God,

2 Of the doctrine about baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection from the dead, and eternal judgment.

3 We will do that, if God permits it.

4 For those who were once enlightened, experienced the heavenly gift, were made partakers of the Holy Spirit,

5 Experienced the good word of God and the powers of the coming age,

6 And have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them to repentance again, since they put the Son of God up on the cross again for themselves and expose him to public disgrace.

7 For the earth, which soaks in the rain that frequently falls on it and produces herbs useful for those who work the soil, receives blessing from God,

8 But that which produces thorns and briars is rejected and about to be doomed, whose final state is to be burned.

9 But, beloved, even though we speak this way, we are convinced of better things of you and things that accompany salvation.

10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, which you have shown [by your life] for his name in that, you have served and do serve the saints.

11 We desire that each one of you would show the same diligence to [obtain] the unshakable assurance of hope all the way to the end,

12 So that you will not be apathetic but followers of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

God’s Promise Is Sure

13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, and since he could not solemnly swear by anyone greater, he swore by himself,

14 Saying, “I will bless you, surely blessing, and multiplying, multiply you.” [Genesis 22:17]

15 So, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.

16 Truly people swear by the greater, and a vow of confirmation is to them the end of all argument.

17 In this, God wanting even more abundantly to show to the heirs of promise the unchangeableness of his counsel confirmed it with a vow,

18 So that by two unchangeable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge could have great comfort to hang on to the hope set before us.

19 That [hope] we have is a sure and steadfast anchor for the soul and enters the other side of the veil,

20 Where our forerunner, Jesus, entered, having become a high priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.

Hebrews Chapter 7

The Great Priest Melchizedek

1 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem [and] priest of the most high God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him.

2 Abraham also gave him a tenth of everything. First of all, [Melchizedek] by interpretation [means] King of righteousness, and then King of Salem [means] King of peace.

3 [He is] without father, mother, or a genealogy, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life. In this sense, he continually remains a priest like the Son of God.

4 Now consider how great this man was, to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave ten percent of the spoils of war.

5 Truly those who are from the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a command to take a tenth from the people according to the law, that is, from their brethren even though they come out of the loins of Abraham.

6 But he whose lineage is not from them received a tenth from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises.

7 Without any contradiction, the lesser is blessed by the greater.

8 Here, men who die receive a tenth, but there, he of whom it is witnessed that he lives [receives them].

9 If I may say so, Levi also, who receives the tenth, paid ten percent through Abraham,

10 For he was still in the loins of his forefather when Melchizedek met him.

Jesus Is Greater Than Aaronic Priesthood

11 Therefore, if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law) what further need [was there] that another priest should arise in the order of Melchizedek and not be mentioned in the order of Aaron?

12 Because the priesthood was being transferred, there needed to be a change in the law also.

13 For the one of whom these things are spoken about belongs to another tribe about which no one attended the altar.

14 For [it is] obvious that our Lord arose from Judah, [and] about this tribe Moses said nothing pertaining to the priesthood.

15 Yet something is still more obvious―another priest arose, similar to Melchizedek,

16 Who was made [a priest] not according to the law about meeting human requirements but according to the power of an endless life.

17 For he testifies, “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.” [Psalm 110:4]

18 So there truly is a canceling of the former commandment because of its weakness and ineffectiveness,

19 For the law made nothing perfect. But bringing in a better hope [did], by which we draw near to God.

20 None of this happened without an oath,

21 For indeed, they [Mosaic Law priests] were made priests without an oath, but this one [was made priest] with an oath by him who said to him, “The Lord swore and will not repent, ’You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.’”

22 By so much more was Jesus made a guarantee of a better covenant.

23 Truly, there were many priests, because they were prevented from continuing by death,

24 But this one, because he endures forever, has a nontransferable priesthood.

25 Therefore, he is also able to save them, who come to God through him, to the uttermost, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

26 For such a high priest is suitable for us. [He is] holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens,

27 Who doesn’t need daily, like those high priests, to offer up a sacrifice first for his own sins, then for the people’s. He did this [sacrifice for the people] once when he offered up himself.

28 The law appoints men high priests who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, [appoints] forever the Son, who is completely perfect.

Hebrews Chapter 8

The Priestly Work of Jesus

1 Now, this is the summary of what we have talked about. We have such a High Priest who sits at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens.

2 [He serves as] the minister of the most holy place and the true tent, which the Lord set up, not man.

3 Every high priest is appointed to bring both gifts and sacrifices, and so [it is] necessary that this man have something to bring also.

4 If he were on earth, then he would not be a priest, since there are priests, who bring gifts according the law,

5 Who serve as an example and shadow of heavenly things just as Moses was warned by God when he was ready to make The Tent, for he says, “See, [that] you make everything according to the pattern shown to you on the mountain.”

6 But now he [Jesus] has gotten a more excellent ministry and is far superior, as he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.

Jesus Is the Priest of The New Covenant

7 For if that first [covenant] had been faultless, then there would be no need to seek the second.

8 But finding fault with them, he says, “Look, the days are coming when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,

9 “Not like the covenant that I made with their ancestors on the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt. Since they did not continue in my covenant, I had no interest in them,” says the Lord.

10 “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel in those days,” says the Lord. “I will put my laws into their mind and write them in their heart. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

11 “Never again will they teach their neighbor saying, ’Know the Lord,’ for they all will know me, from the least to the greatest.

12 “For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and I will certainly no longer remember their sins and wickedness.” [Jeremiah 31:31-34]

13 By saying, “New,” he has made the first [covenant] old. Now that which is worn out and grows old [is] soon to disappear.
